Audrey, a Confused Young Woman

Audrey was a young woman who was confused. She didn’t
believe the Christian faith, but neither could she accept atheism. While
studying secular philosophy in France, she had given up her belief in
the Bible, but she had nothing to fill the void that remained. “I guess
I’m an agnostic,” Audrey reasoned. “I’m not sure there is a God, but
then again, I’m not sure that there isn’t.” Life had no meaning for her.
She thought, “If it is true that there is no life beyond this one on earth,
then what does it matter how I live now?
Then one night Audrey locked herself in her bedroom
determined to discover what she believed. In the darkness, she
went to the window and threw it open. Looking up to the heavens
she cried out, “God, if there be a God, if You will give me some
philosophy that makes reasonable sense to me, I will commit
myself to follow it.”
She paced the floor, mulling over the philosophies she had
studied in college. Then the words of Jesus came to her mind,
“Whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believeth
thou this?” (John 11:26). “Of course not!” Audrey thought. “I’ve
already settled that question. Bible stories don’t make sense. I
can’t believe those miracle stories—the virgin birth, Jonah and
the whale, and Noah and the flood. The Bible is not reasonable.”
But she couldn’t get the words out of her mind, “Whosoever
liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
She later wrote, “Suddenly God’s mysterious revelation was given
to me. I could not reason out the mystery of the incarnation, but
God caused me to know that it was a fact. I knelt in tears of joy
and worshiped him as Savior and Lord.”
