Suing The Church
Illustration★★★A man named Gary Begley sued the World Wide Church of God for $180,000. He was claiming damages incurred by the church’s teaching on morality (i.e., abstinence from sex outside of marriage). He abstained for six years, and asked to be compensated at the rate of $30,000 per year. How he came up with figure is unclear, and why he blames the church for its teaching is also unclear, but his lawsuit is indicative of our society’s compulsion to avoid responsibility and place blame.
The point
A lawsuit for damages due to a church's moral teachings exemplifies modern avoidance of personal responsibility.
