Mann, was introduced to a man who had achieved a small
degree of success as a writer. “Mr. Mann, I can’t tell you how
humble I feel in your distinguished presence,” the writer grov-
eled. “Compared to you, I don’t even deserve to be called a
hack.” Mr. Mann was courteous, but later he said to his host:
“That man has no right to make himself so small. He is not that
big.”
