Children
Illustration★★★Many behavioral scientists have come up with an interesting theory on aging. The theory hypothesizes that human behavior is cyclic. We start as babies, but slowly learn social customs and norms and eventually act like adults.
However, in the twilight years, we regress back into child-like modes of behavior and thought processes. For instance, many people who are very old and nearing death sleep in the fetal position. When someone is near death, they are often said to be closer to God.
And when a baby is born he is said to be a bundle from heaven. And if all this is so, then isn’t being child-like the closest any of us will ever get to our Creator?
“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 18:3).
The point
A theory that aging cycles us back toward childlike behavior suggests that becoming like a child, as Jesus taught, may be what brings us closest to God.
