Candidates must meet strict qualifications and pass both written and proficiency tests. Those who make the cut are held to a very high standard.
The guards, which are changed every 30 minutes in the summer and every hour in the winter, have been patrolling the tomb 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, continuously, since April 6, 1948, in all kinds of weather, including hurricanes. For them, guarding the tomb is not just an assignment, it’s the highest honor a service person can receive.
