NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Illustration★★★★

We make them every year. Many of them we break. Sometimes we laugh when we speak of New Year’s resolutions, and, of course, some of them are so 376 ridiculous as to deserve ridicule. However, there is a serious aspect of the whole question of resolutions. It is that the vision of high moment has a tendency to vanish, the ideals dissolve, the screen becomes dark. William James, the great philosopher, once said, “If you have an emotion do something, if you don’t you won’t have it any more.” Ideals, like muscles, atrophy. We must do something about them. We must keep them alive or we shall hear, “In a little while ye shall see me no more.”

The point

New Year's resolutions fade into forgotten ideals unless acted on right away, since unused resolve atrophies like an unused muscle.
