Around 250 B.C., the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle had said that a spider was an insect that had six legs. No one questioned the wisdom of the great Aristotle. If he said spiders had six legs, well then, spiders had six legs!
Some 20 centuries later the biologist Lamarck closely examined a spider. What a surprise! He found that spiders had eight legs.
The point
For 2000 years people believed Aristotle's false claim that spiders had six legs; one scientist's careful observation revealed the truth—challenging authority is wise.
