Marguerite Higgins, who won the Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of the Korean War, tells of an experience she had with the Fifth Company of Marines, which originally numbered 18,000, in combat with over 100,000 of the enemy. In that terrible retreat through the snowy mountains, with the temperature 42 degrees below zero, the reporters were standing around one morning as the weary, half-frozen soldiers stood beside their dilapidated trucks eating from tin cans.

One huge Marine was eating cold beans with his trench knife, his clothes stiff as a board in the cold, his face covered with a heavy beard caked with mud. The correspondent asked him, “If I were God and cold grant you anything you wished, what would you most like to have?”

The man stood motionless for a moment, then raised his head and replied, “Give me tomorrow!”

Giving when it counts

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, “Yes, I’ll do it if it will save her.” As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, “Will I start to die right away?” Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her. You see, after all, understanding and attitude are everything. 1. Give God what’s right--, not what’s left! 2. “Pray” is a four letter word that you can say anywhere (except in a public school). 3. Man’s way leads to a hopeless end! Gods way leads to an endless hope! 4. A lot of kneeling will keep you in good standing. 5. He who kneels before God can stand before anyone! 6. To be almost saved is to be totally lost 7. We’re too blessed to be depressed. 8. In the sentence of life the Devil may be a comma but DO NOT LET him be the PERIOD! 9. Don’t put a question mark where God put a period. 10. God loves everyone, but probably prefers “fruits of the spirit” over “religious nuts”! 11. God grades on the cross, not the curve. 12. Are you wrinkled with burden? Come on into Church for a faith lift! 13. Prayer - Don’t give God instructions-just report for duty! 14. Wal-Mart isn’t the only saving place! 15. God doesn’t want shares of your life, He wants controlling interest! 16. Don’t wait for 6 strong men to take you to church. 17. A family altar can alter a family. 18.
