Science and Faith Converge
Story★★★★Half a century ago unbelief was very aggressive under the influence of materialistic science. Not all the front-rank representatives of science then any more than now were definitely irreligious, but the prevailing assumption among them was that the universe could be explained in terms of physics and chemistry and of the operation of mechanical laws.
But what is happening today? As Sir James Jeans put it, science has taken a hairpin bend in the past century, and ordered thought is following suit. I bid you take note that along with this change of attitude towards the mystery and majesty of the universe and our relation thereto there has come a new emphasis upon the value of religion and our need of God. It has little direct connection with the churches as yet, which makes it all the more significant.
We are hearing on every hand from the leaders of thought that religion must be restored to its former central place in the interests of mankind, because without religion idealism cannot sustain itself.
The point
Half a century ago, materialistic science seemed supreme, but modern science has taken a different turn, newly valuing mystery and emphasizing the need for God in human affairs.
