The Samaritan Woman at the Well

It was so shocking, the Samaritan woman almost dropped her water pot. The man sitting quietly by the well was not only a Jew, but He even asked her for a drink of water. Of course, she wouldn’t refuse. Water was a gift of life in this arid country. But it was unthinkable for a male Jew to address a female Samaritan in public. A quick look into His eyes told her He was not asking for what other men wanted from her.

She set down her water vessel, forgetting to offer Him a drink, and quizzically pointed out that Jews have nothing to do with Samaritans. He replied, “If you really understood who you were talking to, you would have asked Him for a drink of living water.”

The woman didn’t catch His point. She looked at the well and said, “You don’t even have a bucket and a rope. Where are you going to get this living water?”

The man kindly replied, “People who drink water from this well will get thirsty again. The water I’m offering you will quench your thirst forever. It will become like a fountain inside of you that never quits flowing.”

Understanding finally began to dawn. Is this stranger talking about the deepest need of her life, the desire to be known, loved, and cherished? Looking down at her water pot, she blurted out, “Sir, please give me this living water so that I will never thirst again or have to come back to this well!”

They then talked more about faith and religion and truth, and she saw more of who He was—that He was kind, forgiving, and didn’t judge. She said openly, “I know that when the Messiah comes, He will make everything clear.”

Jesus quietly looked into her eyes and said, “I who speak to you am He.” She knew in that moment that God had given her the gift she had been longing for.

The Samaritan woman’s heart was so full of life, it began to gush over. The joy of knowing Christ’s love was like an artesian spring deep inside her. It would never stop flowing, and He gave it to her gladly. Her life mattered. She had a purpose. She was loved!

The woman at the well rushed away with contagious enthusiasm. She ran off back to her hometown, eager to tell everyone the secret she’d discovered. The disciples of Jesus, who were in town picking up food for lunch, were stunned as the Samaritan dashed past them. They looked down at their feet and saw a large clay pot full of cool water. It sat untouched as Jesus smiled.
