Apparently in the 14th century mince pies were oval or cradle-shaped, like a manger, and often an image of the baby Jesus was outlined on the pastry. The filling was made with game, poultry, beef, eggs and spices. The pies were intended as reminders of the manger in which Jesus was born, and as they were eaten, people thought about the Holy Child. Today some people make a silent wish when they take their first bite of a mince pie. It may sound a little superstitious, but that’s okay if it helps to remind them not only of the origin of mince pies, but also the real meaning of Christmas.
