I Am Not Good Enough

An attorney was invited by a friend to a youth convention. They had not seen each other since childhood though they had kept in touch with one another through the years. The friend, who was from New York, thought it a good opportunity to see each other in as much as the convention was near where the attorney lived. At the convention many different seminars were being offered by various speakers.

The inviting friend suggested they attend a seminar on “Gaining Decisions for Christ.” As they sat in the audience, the speaker made mention that he needed a volunteer, and pointing to the attorney, he asked if she would be willing. Shyly, she walked to the platform. The speaker asked her to sit down and then began with the illustration he wanted to demonstrate to the attendees.

Step by step, the presenter carefully led her through the process of leading a person to accept Christ. Upon turning to the book of Revelation, he asked her to read chapter three and verse twenty. After asking several questions, he looked at her and asked, “Is there anything that would keep you from inviting the Lord Jesus into your heart?”

Though it was supposed to be only a demonstration, there came over both the presenter and the audience an awestricken sense that to her this was real. She had not been confronted with that question till that moment, and it caused her to consider it. There was a long pause, and then with a reverential tone she said, “I am not good enough.”

Realizing that the live demo turned into a real-life experience, the presenter asked, “Have you tried to become good enough?” Pensively, she said, “Yes.” Have you succeeded?” the speaker asked.

“No,” she responded. “Then if you cannot become good enough in your own strength, whom do you need to make you ‘good enough’?” he asked.

Looking at the pastor, and now with teary eyes she said, “Jesus!” “Then,” the pastor asked, “is there anything that will keep you from inviting the Lord into your life so He can make you ‘good enough’?”
