An Infidel Like a Dog
Illustration★★★Boswell asked Dr. Johnson, the great lexicographer, if he did not think Foote, the famous tragedian, was an infidel. Johnson replied, “I do not know, sir, that the fellow is an infidel; but if he be an infidel, he is an infidel as a dog is an infidel; that is to say, he has never thought upon the subject.” This being reported to Foote, he exclaimed indignantly, “ What, sir to talk thus of a man of liberal educatioa; a man who for years was at the University of Oxford; a man who has added sixteen new characters to the literature of his country!” Foote’s case is only too common. Men of little minds.and partial culture condemn religion and reject God.
