THE CROSS OF VICTORY
Illustration★★★It is startling to us who are so attached to the Cross as a symbol of Christian- ity and its all-conquering power to find no symbolic use of the Cross in the Catacombs, or elsewhere, for almost three hundred years after Christ’s Ascen- sion. When at last it does appear in the Catacombs, it is not the passion Cross nor the Cross of the Lord’s suffering, but the resurrection Cross, the Cross of the Lord’s victory, that we see. Christ is represented as coming forth from his tomb mightily bearing a Cross, a picture of the living Lord who has triumphed over death.

Early Christian art avoided depicting the Cross for nearly three centuries, and when it finally appeared, it portrayed Christ's triumphant resurrection rather than His suffering.
