I Have Had No Peace

An elderly woman approached the evangelist after his presentation and requested to speak with him alone. After the audience was dismissed, she and the pastor sat down in an adjacent room.

As she began to talk, she could not contain her tears. “Let me tell you my story,” she confided.

“When I was a young wife, to my great delight I discovered I was pregnant. I just couldn’t wait until my husband came home to tell him the great news. When he arrived, I served him his meal and then told him the great news.

To my shock, he said, ‘Get rid of it. I don’t want any children.’ I was struck with grief. I thought that maybe he had just had a bad day.

Pastor, I did not know what to do. I just could not bear the thought of loosing him. So in my distress, I had an abortion. Since then, I have never had peace.

I killed my child. I have prayed and prayed, but my conscience still tortures me.

What can I do?” Opening the Bible, the pastor turned to 1 John 1:9. There he read these words, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” “But how can that be true?” she queried, “How can God with just a few words wipe out such a cruel crime?”

“No, it is not just a few words. This promise is backed by the supreme sacrifice He provided in giving his own Son,” the pastor responded.

“It is true because He promised it. It is up to you to believe it or not. Do you want to accept His offer, or do you want to continue torturing your soul?” Realizing the reality of God’s sure promise, the elderly woman knelt down, and with a grateful heart, claimed the forgiveness offered and went home in peace.
