Slavery was the eleven year-old child Isabella sold at auction for $150 as her parents, freed by the master’s last will and testament, watched helplessly. Slavery was Isabella herself, a generation later, watching as her own son, Peter, was sold and taken from her.
A year later, unable to stand the bondage of slavery any longer, Isabella ran away only to be captured. In the days after her capture, she turned beyond herself and her world of despair to Jesus.
When freedom came to all slaves in New York state in 1827, Isabella immediately went to court, sued the man who had taken her son, and regained custody
