Story★★★Illustration 8. In Wyoming a missionary went into a settlement where they had had no services for two years for lack of funds, and held serv- ices in a tiny school house. In the audience was a millionaire’s son from New York, accompanied by his tutor. It was the old story: mother dead, father absorbed in business, sisters in society, no place for the boy.
He had been expelled from school after school. The missionary took these words for his text: “The Master is come and calleth for thee.” When the crude service came to a close, and the voices rang out over the stillness of the great plain and the echoes came back from the distant hills, in that old familiar hymn, “Just as I am without one plea,” the boy dropped his head in his hands and we knew he had found his Lord.
Then he wrote home to his father, “Father, I want you to let 330 THE ILLUSTRATION me stay here and learn to be a strong man of the mountains and plains. I am forty miles from temptation.” And there he is living his new life. Suppose you were developing the point that men find God in most unlikely places, and used this as an illustration to bring out that point, what lesson or lessons outside of this would be indirectly brought home, although you said nothing about them?
