Historical Account★★★★MARTYRDOM One of the leaders of the early church was Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna. He was brought to trial by the authorities and told he must renounce his Christian faith. He replied, “Fourscore and six years have I served Him, and He never did me wrong: how then can I revile my King, my Savior?” They took him out and put him to death. Later when the Christians wrote their history of that period they said, “Polycarp was martyred, Statius Quadratus being proconsul of Asia, and Jesus Christ being King forever!” ...................................
