Trimming Branches vs. Healing Roots

Nature NuggetObject LessonAnalogy★★★★

So I like to think about our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions being a top, like a tree, right? Or tree branches or fruit of a tree. But if you trim the branches, what happens eventually if you never deal with the roots.

Yeah, well, then it’s just gonna keep coming back, the same issue, the same kind of fruit, if you will. So a lot of my patients who’ve had therapy before or have even had CBT before, if they’ve never addressed their core beliefs, the roots, their issue either comes back or they generally describe.

And so if you’re listening, you wanna tune into this. If you’re constantly struggling with the same thing over and over again... it’s probably because you haven’t addressed the root that’s feeding that consequence of emotions or behaviors or even negative thoughts.

The point

This analogy compares thoughts, behaviors, and emotions to the branches and fruit of a tree. Just as trimming branches won't prevent regrowth if the roots are unhealthy, addressing surface-level issues without dealing with underlying core beliefs will lead to recurring problems.
