Beer Commercial
IllustrationAnalogy★★★★1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. This is your typical beer commercial: A good looking, hot sweaty man is just finishing up his last few moments of a day at work on a construction site. His jeans are torn. His shirt is dirty.
They show him throwing a cinderblock or something heavy into the back of a large truck to emphasize masculinity. He leans up against a wall while wiping the sweat off his forehead appearing to be totally worn out. The next scene has him coming in from work and he sits down at the bar and orders a beer. The bartender slides down the bar a frosty bottle.
He opens up the bottle with a accentuating cshhh. He drinks it down and leans back in satisfaction and says Ahhhhh! If you the viewer are thirsty at home the message it conveys is that beer will quench your thirst. It appeals to the Lust of the Flesh.
He drinks it down and then two half dressed woman notices that he’s having good time and experiencing such satisfaction and they conclude it must be the beer. Now you have Lust of the Eyes. The next scene is everyone’s standing around having him with acceptance then you have POL.
This is the Devils deception This is disgusting. This is deception. This is a lie.
The point
Beer advertising manipulates by appealing to three levels of worldly desire: physical satisfaction, visual attraction, and pride—exemplifying 1 John 2:16.
