house across the valley: “Be you the
windows across the valley?” She told
them the comfort that the lights from
Kipling’s house had always given her.

lights burning or maybe be you not?”
she asked. After that the Kiplings took
down the curtains and shades on the
back windows of their home that the
light might shine the more brightly
