A Crisis of Belief
Story★★★★The real trouble running through masses and classes alike, which is collective only because it is personal, is that crowds of people have ceased to believe that they have anything more vital to save than their own skin. Dr. Dale knew what he meant when in a bitter moment he said, “Nobody is afraid of God now.” I am not sure whether, in what is called a religious assembly, a man today does not speak somewhat with a foreign accent who maintains that the problem of sin, of personal guilt and failure, is the first and worst and nearest of all problems for each man of us and for society.

Modern society has ceased to fear God and regards self-preservation as paramount; the problem of personal sin is now foreign to contemporary thinking.
