Geese Flying In Formation

Apparently, the V-shape enables geese to fly at least 71% farther than if they
were flying solo. The reason for this is that each bird causes an updraft for the
goose behind, which makes flying much easier. Geese that fall out of formation
experience wind resistance that slows them down. They need to rejoin the
formation as quickly as possible, otherwise they will be unable to keep up
with the rest of the flock.
The point
Geese flying in V-formation travel farther by drafting off each other, and quickly rejoin the flock if they fall out, since going it alone costs them speed and endurance.
