Life After Death

I believe that when the physical life ceases — to put it personally, if it should chance that one of you should die to-night and your breath cease and your body lie cold in death, immediately you — the person — will find yourself in another atmosphere, but still living, and you will be there exactly what you are as you sit in the pew there; all the passions, all the tendencies, all the ideals, all the virtues, all the vices, all the glory, all the shame, that are in you, will be there in you still. And I have no hesitation in saying that should you be a bad man full of malignant passion, selfish, cruel, debauched, when that little tie of the body is loosened and the spirit is out in the world beyond, it will be in torment indescribable, and that it is in allusion to that, that our Lord used the strange expression about the rich man in the parable: “In hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torment.”
