A Long Look at Jesus

They crucified him . . . and sitting down they watched him. Mar. 27:35-36 Suppose we sit down today and take a long, long look at Jesus. There are different ways of doing it.

We might recall all that we have ever heard men say 90 about Jesus. We would look at the body of testimony and find in it a beautiful etching of Jesus. Or we might sit at a desk and have brought to us the various “lives” of Jesus, as, for instance, those of Papini, Geikie, Bowie, and Middleton Murry. With this extensive material before us we can have an even more com- plete picture—a picture of color, light and shadow.

But the view that we are to take today is direct—free of personal bias and literary intrusions. Let us sit down before the Cross as it was nineteen hundred years ago, and, with the guarding soldiers, look at the man with the nails in his hands and feet and the crown of thorns on his head.

We are filled with awe, for we behold the most moving scene in history. Here on Golgotha we, with the soldiers, see revealed in a mighty panorama the greatest drama the world has ever witnessed. We are caught up in the very progress of the universe.
