Everyone Makes Mistakes

New York Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch apologized Thursday, October 7, 1998, for his inexplicable defensive lapse which contributed to the Yankees loss in Game Two to Cleveland in the American League Championship Series. USA Today reported that Yankee Manager Joe Torre and outfielder Paul O’Neill said the player had no reason to apologize for his decision to argue the call instead of running after the errant throw in the extra-inning 4-1 loss to the Indians.

“We are all in this together,” Torre said. “We have all made mistakes, lain sleepless at nights, wishing you had never made mistakes but we have all done it.”

Said O’Neill, “We had plenty of chances to win the game. We shouldn’t have been in the 12th inning.” He added, “I am embarrassed to see a player like that booed by the fans after the season we have had.”
