Kinsman Redeemer

Elimelech had a wife named Naomi and they lived in Moab. They had two boy’s, Mahlon and Chilion. They each married Moabite woman. One was named Orpah and the other was named Ruth.

Elimelech, Mahlon and Chilion all died. All three woman are now widow’s. Naomi decides to go back home to Bethlehem. Ruth wanted to go with her so they both are going home.

There was relative of Elimelech’s and his name was Boaz. Boaz noticed that the new girl, Ruth who was gleaning in his field. He noticed she was different. To make a long story short, Ruth asked Boaz to redeem her inheritance. What does redeem the inheritance mean?

There was a custom that stated if a husband die the nearest of kin would be able to redeem his inheritance and take the widow as a wife. If the nearest of kin chose not to redeem then next closest could redeem the inheritance.

The next day Boaz assembled the elders of the city at the gate and asked the nearest of kin if he wanted to redeem the inheritance and he said, “No.” Boaz, then redeemed or bought back the inheritance of Elimelech and Ruth became his wife.

Friends, Jesus created a beautiful earth and gave it as an inheritance to Adam. When Adam sinned he gave the inheritance to Satan. Jesus in His mercy became a human or nearest of kin to succeed where Adam fell and redeem the lost inheritance. Jesus is our kinsman redeemer.
