You Can’t Run From Your Sin
IllustrationParable★★★★There is an old Scottish tale about a bridegroom who was murdered by a friend on a festal eve. The cup that his friend gave him was mingled with poison. Death was in the Castle, so the murderer took the fleetest horse and fled in to the forest. All night long he plunged his spurs into the flanks of the racing steed, endeavoring to put as great a distance between himself and the scene of his crime.
But just a dawn was breaking; he emerged from the forest, the horse bespoted with foam, and looked up horrified to see that he was right in front of the castle. He had ridden hard, but had ridden round and round.
He thought he was fleeing from his crime, but he was only returning to it. We cannot get away from our sin unless God takes it from us. We cannot run walk or fly fast enough to escape it. Unless it is forgiven and covered by the atoning blood of Christ, it will go to the grave with us and rise before the great white throne of God’s judgment.
We can never outrace it, but we can give it up and in God’s mercy find not only a plan of redemption but redemption itself.
The point
A murderer flees through the forest all night only to find himself back at the castle at dawn; we cannot escape our sins through our own efforts. Only Christ's atonement provides true escape.
