Coventry during World War II search parties found the body of a nurse in the hallway of a heavily bombed hospital. The nurse was dead, but underneath her prostrate form was a small baby who was still breathing. Friends of the nurse recalled the valorous manner in which the nurse had fought her way through the flames that had swept the halls, and her urgings: “We must save the children. They are the hope of the empire.”
