Martin Luther and the Book of James

We have a really great example of this in sacred history with Martin Luther. ... Who knows what Brother Luther did with the book of James. He ripped it out of his Bible. He literally ripped it out of his Bible.

He really didn’t like the book of James. He loved Paul. He loved Paul. But James was like, Why do you think Martin Luther didn’t like James?

Anyone have any ideas? Yeah, he talks about works a lot, doesn’t he? James, he has that whole section, and what is it, was it chapter 2 or 3? Show me your faith without your works.

I’ll show you my faith by my works. Works with faith without works is dead. And so he’s got this big thing. What kind of a church did Martin Luther come out of?

Heavy works based church. Really, he got traumatized with that stuff. He would, when you hear the mortifications of his body that he would do to gain acceptance, to gain holiness with God, he said, I believe it’s quoted in the book Great Controversy, he stated that had God not intervened, he probably would have killed himself through all of the mortifications he was doing.

He would lay out in the snow all night to just suffer his body to get the sin out. And it was extreme, so he was traumatized by that. He saw the Book of James, I cannot accept that. He literally tore it out.
