Eyes Fixed Upward
Poem★★★★It is related of Michelangelo that when he came down from the scaffolding from which he had for some weeks been painting a fresco on a high ceiling, he had become so accustomed to turn his eyes upward that it was with real pain he forced himself to turn his eyes to the ground. Oh, blessed engagement possible to these spiritual orbs of ours! Would that they might evermore be so arrested, habituated, held by the countenance of Divine Love that we could never be satisfied to turn them from His face!
Such engagement with God and fixing of faith upon Him is the way to peace, joy, the life to come— one chief element of whose felicity is expressed in the words, “They shall see his face.”” At this Christmas season let us engage the vision of our souls afresh with God and Christ and the beauty of holiness. “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”
