Agnosticism Is Dangerous
Story★★★★Agnosticism is dangerous. You can see its danger in the last sentence of Somerset Maugham’s summing up: “The practical outcome of agnosticism is that you act as though God did not exist.”
If all mankind adopted this position the result would be chaos; there could be no common brotherhood, no co-operation in the world. Each man would seek his own pleasure only. Duty would lose all sanctions, and life would be as Thomas Hobbes described it: “No arts, no letters, no society, and which is worst of all, continual fear and danger of violent death, and the life of man solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.” That is the danger of agnosticism; lack of belief leads inevitably to lack of morality: but belief in God is the corrective to chaos.
So we are back to that position which has been emphasized over and over again: the issue before the world is not merely belief or lack of it, but God or chaos.
