Biblical Mothers in the Hall of Fame

Did you ever notice the way in which the Bible honors the mothers of men? They are placed in a hall of fame all their own. No matter whether he was a wise or a foolish, a righteous or an evil king, his mother’s name is set down. It all runs something like this: His mother’s name was Jochebed.

His mother’s name was Jehoaddan. His mother’s name was Zibiah. His mother’s name was Jecholiah. His mother’s name was Jerusha.

His mother’s name was Abi. His mother’s name was Hephzibah. His mother’s name was Hamutal. His mother’s name was Jedidah.

His mother’s name was Micaiah. His mother’s name was Elizabeth. His mother’s name was Mary. You will remember that it was a mother who said, “Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.”

It is always so. Who else but a mother has a right to demand that her children shall sit on thrones and be 284 wreathed with crowns?

It is also important for us to remember that Jesus did not deny the plea, but promised to grant the request if her children would prove worthy. Sometimes a mother’s prayers fail, not because of what she has been or done, but because of the unworthiness of those who refuse the crown with which their mother would crown them.
