Seeking Opportunity
Story★★★★Many of us go about seeking Opportunity, when all the time it is stealthily slipping up on us from the rear. Reminiscent of this truth is a good story that Mark ‘Twain used to tell on himself. Once, while visiting in the Alps, Mark determined to climb a certain mountain and view the sunrise. So he set out at three o’clock one morning, and, on reaching the summit, parked himself in what he considered a strategic location. Then he proceeded to wait. Gradually Twain observed that the sky was growing lighter; but no sun was visible. Finally, looking over his shoulder, he beheld the sun high in the heavens. He had been looking for a sunrise with his eyes in the west!
The point
Mark Twain story: climbs an Alpine mountain at 3 a.m. to watch the sunrise but looks west while the sun rises behind him. He finally turns and sees the sun high in the sky—illustrating how we often seek opportunity in the wrong direction while it passes unnoticed.
