Lighting A Cigar To Settle It
Story★★★Illustration 16. A young lady whose beauty is equal to her bluntness in conver- sation, was visiting a house where other guests were assembled. Among these was the eldest son of a rich manufacturer. The talk turned on matrimonial squabbles.
Said the young man, “I hold that the correct thing for the husband is to begin as he intends to goon. Say the question was one of smoking. Almost immediately I would show my intentions by lighting a cigar and settling the question forever.” The imperious beauty exclaimed, “And I would knock the thing out of your mouth.”
“Do you know,” rejoined the young man, “I don’t think you would be there.” Give the reasons why you would or would not use this illustration in a sermon, in teaching, in conversation.
The point
A young lady and a wealthy young man debate whether the husband should establish his will at the start of marriage; he claims to impose his will by lighting a cigar, she retorts she would knock it out—he replies she wouldn't be there to do so.
