I Will Guide Thee

In the fall of 1951, the World Series was televised across the country—as clearly seen in California as in New York. In southern California the famous veteran of baseball, Ty Cobb, was watching every movement of the World Series games with the keenest interest. When DiMaggio went up to bat, Ty Cobb perceived that he needed a coaching tip or two.

DiMaggio was making no hits. From a distance of three thousand miles he got DiMaggio on the telephone. Ty Cobb told him how to change and improve his stance and how better to put his eye on the ball at the right moment. DiMaggio went up to bat twice after that.

Taking Ty Cobb’s counsel, he knocked the two home runs that won the World Series for his team. If a baseball expert can observe the small details of the game and direct a friend across the stretch of thousands of miles and help him get out of his trap of failure and become a winner, then is it too hard to believe that God is to be trusted when He says, “I will guide thee with mine eye upon thee?”
