There is a story of a little girl who was being put to bed one night and she was afraid of the dark. “Do not be afraid,” said her mother, “God is with you.”

“I know,” said the little girl, “but I want some one with a face.” Pass from that childish story to the words of Paul Elmer More, one of the greatest scholars and the most eminent literary critic America has ever produced. After working his way from a position of complete scepticism to a position where he saw that “the ideals and standards by which men live must have a place in the structure of the Universe,” and then to the position that they must exist in the mind of a Person, and finally to the position that such a Person could not for ever remain silent, he said: “My longing for some audible voice out of the infinite silence rose to a pitch of torture.

To be satisfied, I must see face to face. I must, as it were, handle and feel.” This aching desire to hear a voice and this longing to see a face are both met in the Christian revelation of God to the world. In the Person of Jesus Christ, who came into the world at Bethlehem on the first Christmas morning so long ago, we believe we see the face, the character of God; and in the voice of Jesus Christ we believe we hear the authentic utterance of God.
