Through A TV Commercial
IllustrationStoryTestimony★★★★God speaks in many different ways, and on January 1, 1990, he spoke to Fontella Bass through a television commercial. Bass was at the lowest ebb in her life. Twenty-five years after her Number 1 R&B single “Rescue Me” had made her a star, she found herself broke and alone.
She had started her career in Gospel music, but her R&B success had taken her far from her Christian roots. That day she asked God for a sign—a sign that would help her get back on her feet. At that very moment she heard her own voice on TV, singing “Rescue Me.” She didn’t know that American Express had been using her song on a commercial.
She said, “It was as if the Lord had stepped right into my world!” She did some research and found she was owed back royalties. She started going to church every Sunday. And she started singing again.
She now has a new Gospel album called “No Ways Tired.” Fontella Bass has this to say: “For so many years I tried doing it on my own, and it didn’t work. Then I took it out of my hands and turned it over to him, and now everything’s happening.”
The point
Broke and despairing after decades of decline, Fontella Bass asks God for a sign; moments later she hears her own voice on a TV commercial she didn't know existed, prompting her recovery and return to gospel music. A striking testimony of answered prayer and providence.
